Trinidad & Tobago: a Shifting Energy Landscape

Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited has been involved in a number of Ministry of Planning pilot initiatives, and have partnered with bpTT on a Trinidad and Tobago’s first utility scale solar project. It is expected that this will eventually create up to 112 MW of solar generation for Trinidad and Tobago’s energy grid.

The project is located across two sites – Brechin Castle Couva and Orange Grove Trincity.

A sod turning ceremony in April 2023 signaled the start of construction at Brechin Castle.

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley was joined by the Ministers of Energy and Energy Industries and Public Utilities as well as representatives from bp and Shell. The solar project is being constructed by consortium partners bp Alternative Energy Trinidad and Tobago (bpATT) and Shell Renewables Caribbean (Shell), and once operational, will provide up to 112MWac from two sites – Brechin Castle and Orange Grove.

  • The projects will produce over 300,000 MWh of renewable electricity a year – enough to power up to 42,500 homes and helping to reduce carbon emissions. The plants are being constructed by Lightsource bp, a global leader in the development and management of solar projects. Both sites are expected to be operational in 2024.
  • This announcement came after the consortium took Final Investment Decision (FID) in December 2022.
